Eddy Lab

University of Minnesota, Department of Biology Teaching & Learning

The Eddy lab uses a rigorous research approach to generate data to support science educators in creating resources and climates that promotes student belonging. They aim to amplify the perspective of students from minoritized backgrounds, particularly queer students, to understand the impact of social and cultural features on student motivation and learning in the science classroom.

Sarah gravitated towards designs that had a human touch: hand-drawn illustrations and whimsical font that communicated professionalism and advocacy. Sarah is also a comic book lover, drawn to images that spark your curiosity and instill powerful messages. I worked with Dr. Eddy to create a brand and website that communicated their inclusive environment to prospective students and established public credibility for their research.

Design Goals

At it’s core, the Eddy Lab believes science and medicine should reflect all the people they serve. It was important that our designs reflected that as well. The illustrator on our team, Bailey, worked closely with Dr. Eddy to ensure that the illustrations celebrated the diversity of the lab members and communicated their values in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
